The Telltale Signs of a Dental Emergency

As with any health crisis, it’s essential to recognize the signs of a severe problem.

You need immediate attention if you experience:

  • Bleeding: Large amounts of blood coming from your teeth indicate that they or the roots and gums beneath them have been seriously harmed. If your teeth start to bleed, place a wet, cold compress next to them and call us immediately.
  • Swelling: As with bleeding, swelling around your teeth indicates that there is some serious dental problem that may not otherwise be visible yet. You should take the same precautions.
  • Severe Pain: Any amount of dental pain is a bad sign, but especially severe pain indicates that time is of the essence. If the pain is serious enough that you cannot concentrate or it persists for long periods of time, you should seek immediate attention from a dentist.
  • Physical Damage: If a tooth is chipped, broken, or knocked out entirely, you need to act quickly. Recover the bits of tooth that have fallen out and get to a dentist as soon as you can.

The Foothills Family Dental team is trained to handle every manner of dental emergency. We encourage you to visit us as soon as the injury occurs. We will address the problem immediately, protecting your natural teeth and their roots as much as possible.

How to Respond When You Lose a Tooth

Having a tooth knocked out of your mouth is one of the most severe and shocking dental emergencies. If you experience this, the following steps will raise your chances of a full recovery:

  1. Pick up the tooth by the crown. Do not touch its roots, as this can damage them and prevent it from being reattached.
  2. Rinse the tooth gently with whole milk or your saliva. Do not scrub it or apply soap.
  3. Place the tooth back in its socket, and then bite on gauze or a wet bag of tea to keep it in place. If it won’t fit back in, put it in a container surrounded by whole milk or saliva.
  4. Get to the dentist as quickly as possible.

If you've recently chipped or had a tooth knocked out, call our Remington Street Office (970) 482-6841 or our Lowe Street Office (970) 689-3282 immediately!

I recently switched to Foothills Family Dental after my husband chose to use them. We both find the entire staff to be extremely friendly and easy to work with. They make the whole process of going to the dentist a lot less stressful then other places we've been. And they have fun there, which helps puts the patients as ease (at least it does for me and my husband, who hates going to the dentist!). The hygienists and front office staff are all very nice and both Dr. Richard Pass and Katie, the Treatment Assistant who helped him with my procedure, made sure I knew what was going on every step of the way and that I was comfortable. I am happy I made the switch to this office. Five star rating! Karen H. Read More Testimonials *Results May Vary

Stacie and the doctor were interested in me as a person. I was surprised how much they remembered about me and my family. Then I enjoyed a pain-free teeth cleaning. The doctor then quickly looked at my teeth and gave an honest what should be done but not what could wait. I appreciate that. Five star rating! Tom H. Read More Testimonials *Results May Vary
